Beginning on their ninth day, every time I checked on this litter there was one missing. I would search the basement to find the missing pup and it was always the same large female. I like the big, quirky personalities, so she stayed here and is named after American woman explorer Nellie Bly – who went around the world in 72 days in 1860.
Nellie was in training for hunt tests and coming along nicely. But she lost so much weight where I had placed her, I decoded to bring her home. Once I got her weight up, I decided she had proved her retrieving skills and started her show career. Nellie’s litter mate, Gunner, completed his SHR in April, 2020.
On July 1, 2022, Nellie finished her conformation CH under the capable handling of Stephanie Hentschel. She finally decided showing is fun, so we decided to go ahead and pursue her GCH. She travelled on a limited basis and finished her conformation Grand Champion title on November 6, 2022.
She is a brown dog who is a little larger than average (75#). When we did the PennHip evaluation on Nellie, we were delighted to find her hips were evaluated to be in the best 5% of Chesapeake Bay Retriever hips. OFA evaluated her hips as excellent. We’re expecting her to follow in Ruby’s footsteps and be an exceptional mom.
