In 1975, I mailed a check to a kennel in Alaska and bought my first male Chesapeake Bay Retriever.   I had him flown to Memphis, TN and made the 4-hour trip from Missouri to pick him up.  I named him Chopper.  He became my main hunting dog and he lived until 1990. When hunting with Chopper, we could relax in the blind – Chopper watched and always saw ducks before we did. This new Chopper is likely to be my last male Chesapeake Bay Retriever – he has some big shoes to fill.

Chopper is the result of my decision to breed to HRCH CH Chance MH a second time.  Chance’s litter with Misty has produced two good hunting dogs and one conformation champion that I know of.  I decided to breed him to Willow to see if I could get a little more size on the pups.  I am delighted with the results.  Chopper is showing a very strong retrieving desire, is intelligent and is tending to being a big boy.

I sent him to Jeremy Ries, MoCo Bottoms Labs, at 7 months of age. He finished his SHR title July 29, 2023 and has JH title October 28, 2023. Between his two beginning titles, he completed credit for three passes toward his Seasoned title. Then, we brought him home for duck season.

There were no ducks here in December 2023. I sent him to Stephanie Hentschell to prepare him for the show ring. After a rowdy start, he settled down and won four major shows in four days. He finished his CH title on January 21, 2024. He went back to Jeremy to see how he does in advanced hunt test work. He earned his Seasoned (HR) Title on April 6, 2024. He is training now for his Finished (HRCH) Title – or until I go broke.

Chopper is a dark, reddish-brown boy with a nice coat and lots of muscle.  He resembles his namesake strongly.  He weighed 71 pounds at 7 months.  When he got to Jeremy, Jeremy joked that he was going to ride him to the kennel. He is exceeding my hopes and is doing his namesake proud.
